Department of Athletics set to host annual Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend

The Department of Athletics at the University of Windsor will host their annual Breast Cancer Awareness weekend this Saturday and Sunday in Windsor.

On the weekend, the Lancers will trade in their traditional blue and gold for pink as they raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

Expanding on an initiative from two years ago, Windsor's two basketball, two volleyball and women's hockey teams will all be sporting pink prior to or during their OUA home games on Saturday and Sunday in support of the event.

The Lancers held their first awareness night back in 2007 involving both the men's and women's basketball teams and based on that success, decided to include more varsity events since the inaugural event.

Lancer Basketball is promoting "Hoops for a Cure" in a Saturday night doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Game time is set for 6pm for the women and 8pm for the men at the St. Denis Centre.

It's "Pink at the Rink" for Lancer Women's Hockey on Saturday and Sunday as the Lancer women play a 4:10pm game at South Windsor Arena against Toronto on Saturday followed by a 4:10pm game against the York Lions on Sunday afternoon.

The theme for the women's and men's volleyball Sunday doubleheader against Guelph at 2pm and 4pm at the St. Denis Centre is "Dig Pink".

As part of the initiative, Lancer court teams will wear pink warm-up shirts. The Lancer Women's Hockey team will use pink stick tape and pink laces in their skates.

Lancer coaches will also be involved as they will be wearing pink behind the bench to show their support for the cause.

To raise money for Breast Cancer Research, Pink Lancer T-shirts will be available for sale throughout the weekend for $10 each and the concession stand at the St. Denis Centre will also be selling pink cotton candy that day. Proceeds from these sales will go directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tickets for Lancer basketball are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets for Lancer volleyball and hockey are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Be sure to join us this weekend for a terrific day of activity and to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.
