CIS Track & Field title defense kicks off Thursday at the St. Denis Centre

The Windsor Lancer Track and Field program are looking to defend their CIS national titles this weekend as the CIS Track & Field Championships kick off Thursday at the St. Denis Centre.

After dominating the OUA Championships two weeks ago at York, the Track & Field juggernauts are looking to keep the CIS hardware in Windsor for another year.

OUA men's and women's track & field coach of the year Dennis Fairall lead the men's team to an unprecedented twelfth straight OUA Championship title, and the women to their fifth in six years.

The men's teams 144 points were good enough to clinch the title for the much decorated Lancer squad. The number two ranked Lancers will look to build on the performances they put on at York and return to the top of the podium.

Fifth year Mike Miller was named the OUA Championships male field MVP as he made history broking a 30 year old OUA record in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.93m. The previous record was 16.92m was the second oldest OUA and was set by Martino Catalano from the University of Toronto in 1980.

Adam Kellar led the way for the Lancers medaling three times to help the team get one step closer to its season goals or National Champions.

The number one ranked women will look to build on Noelle Montcalm's four medal performance which returned the Lancers to the top of the OUA podium after a one year absence.

If three gold medals and one silver were not good enough, Montcalm added to her collection after being named the OUA female track MVP solidifying her as one of the best sprinters in the nation.

Montcalm will look to repeat her four medal performance at the CIS Championships last year, and is a nominee for the CIS female track athlete of the year.

Last year saw the women's team defeat their arch rivals, the Guelph Gryphons, by one point to capture the national title, while the men blew away the competition with 145.5 points, leaving them 73 points ahead of their nearest competitor.

The Lancers will hope to get the same sort of breakout performances they had last year in order to hold onto their CIS crown and track and field supremacy.

The 2010 CIS Track & Field Championships kick off on Thursday March 11th and run through until Saturday March 13th. A complete event schedule can be viewed by clicking here.

The event will also be broadcast live on TVCogeco on Friday from 5:00-7:30pm and on Saturday from 12:00-5:00pm.
