OUA Curling Championships Day 4 Recap

Windsor skip Kevin St. Denis.
GUELPH, Ont.- There will be new OUA men's and women's champions this season after both defending banner-winners were eliminated from contention on Day 4 of the OUA Curling Championships being held at the Guelph Curling Club.

The two-time defending champions from Waterloo were beaten by the upstart Toronto Varsity Blues in a suspenseful quarter-final contest on Sunday night. After the Blues forced an extra end with two points in the eighth, skip Evan Lilly froze his final rock near the button, putting the pressure on the Warriors' Jake Walker to stick his last shot. Walker's final stone slid just past the button, allowing the Blues to steal a point and a berth in the semi-finals against Brock, who topped the 2013 CIS Champions earlier in the day and took top spot in Pool A.

The Carleton Ravens and skip Brett Lyon-Hatcher defeated the Guelph Gryphons in the other men's quarter-final on Sunday night and will face the Laurier Golden Hawks with a spot in the OUA finals on the line Monday morning. The Golden Hawks gained top spot in Pool B after winning the shoot-out tie-breaker over Toronto in the round-robin portion of the tournament.

With the women's standings less solidified coming into Sunday's matches, there were still a couple of playoff positions up for grabs early on Day 4. The Laurentian Lady Vees booked a quarter-final spot as skip Paige Droog led her rink to a slight 4-3 win over Waterloo, while Toronto solidified its place in Monday's semi-finals with a 6-1 record to win Pool A.

In Pool B, Brock earned a big victory over Carleton, moving them into a three-way tie for the final playoff spot with Western and Lakehead. The Badgers and skip Erin Macaulay earned a bye through to the second tie-breaker, as Western and Lakehead battled to stay alive in the tournament. The defending OUA winners from Western briefly kept their repeat hopes alive, beating Lakehead 6-1 in the first tie-breaker match. However Western would fall to Brock in Tie-Breaker #2, ending their 2014 OUA championship run.

Playing their third game of the day in their quarter-final contest with Guelph, the Badgers ran out of gas and Jaimee Gardiner's rink setup a semi-final date with undefeated Laurier, scoring a 6-3 triumph.

Carleton and the Lady Vees played a tightly contested match in the other women's quarter-final that came down to the final stone. After Laurentian tied the game with a steal in the seventh, Jamie Sinclair was faced with a take-out opportunity for the win in the final end. The Ravens skip made good on her chance, scoring two points with the final rock in the eighth, advancing her rink to a Monday morning semi-final match-up with Toronto.

The women's and men's semi-final games all start at 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning at the Guelph Curling Club. The gold-medal matches and bronze-medal contests begin at 1:00 p.m. The top three teams from the women's and men's competition all book spots in the CIS national championships taking place at the University of Regina from March 19-23.
