Box Score QUEBEC CITY, Que.- The Windsor Lancers made history on Sunday afternoon at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Final 8 championship, becoming just the second-ever CIS women's basketball squad to capture five straight national championships after defeating the stingy McGill Martlets 60-47 at PEPS Gymnasium.
In her final post-secondary contest wearing the blue and gold,
Korissa Williams recorded a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds, while adding seven assists and six steals. Sophomore forwards
Emily Prevost and
Cheyanne Roger tallied 12 and 10 points respectively in the victory.Â
The Lancers overcame a McGill defense ranked first overall in the country that held Windsor well below their average offensive output, with some timely shooting throughout the final two quarters of play that hampered the RSEQ champion's ability to overtake the Windsor lead.
By capturing their fifth consecutive national banner, the Lancers join CIS basketball lore alongside the Laurentian Voyageurs, who accomplished the feat from 1975-79. In addition, fifth-years Williams and
Jocelyn LaRocque become the first players in history to win five CIS women's basketball championships. The Lancers also extend their CIS post-season winning streak to 21 games.
After a dominant performance throughout the weekend, including an average of 23.6 points, 12 rebounds, 6.3 assists and six steals, Williams was named the CIS Tournament MVP for the second time in her illustrious career. She also captured the honour two years earlier at the 2013 championships. Roger was named to the CIS Tournament all-star squad after averaging 13 points and nine rebounds throughout the weekend.
Williams scored the Lancers first six points of the finals, including a quick running lay-up just five seconds into the contest. The CIS defensive player of the year then forced two Martlet turnovers, converting those into free-throw buckets on the other end of the floor. Kristine Lalonde picked up where she left off from Saturday's semifinals, draining a three-point bucket that gave Windsor a 9-6 lead midway through the quarter. Â
Williams' speed had the Martlet defence in fits throughout the first quarter, resulting in 10 free-throw attempts for the fifth-year senior. She converted on seven, and tallied 11 points in the opening quarter alone. LaRocque hit a three with just over a minute left, and the women took a 21-10 lead into the second quarter.
Dianna Ross brought the McGill faithful to its feet in the second quarter with an open three, pulling the Martlets within 10. Carolann Cloutier notched another basket from beyond the arc, helping spark the McGill offence to life.
The momentum was further tilted when Williams, who led all scorers in the opening half with 13 points, committed her third personal foul midway through the quarter. With the best defensive player in the country sitting on the bench, McGill's offence gained a bit more freedom and was able to outscore Windsor 16-13 in the second to bring the deficit down to single digits by the halftime buzzer.
Six-straight points from the Martlets to open the second half put immediate pressure on the defending champions. At the other end, Williams missed her first three attempts of the quarter, and the Windsor offence, ranked first nationally throughout the season, struggled to get going early in the second half.
Roger hit two free throws to get the Lancers on the board, and Williams followed that by putting on an offensive clinic during Windsor's next three possessions. After a lay-up, the veteran guard went on an end-to-end run, finishing the play with an acrobatic bucket. Another speedy run by Williams led to two more points for the Lancers.
The Martlets, however, persisted on the offensive end, keeping themselves within striking distance throughout the third quarter. Alex Kiss-Rusk grabbed an offensive board and converted for two in the post, cutting the Lancer lead to four, and came up with a big block on the defensive end to further stymie the Windsor offence. At one point, the Martlets came within two points of the lead, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the contest, trailing by seven heading into the final stanza.
LaRocque sank a timely three to begin the fourth quarter for the Lancers, pushing the lead back up to 10. Minutes later, a corner three by Gabriela Hebert pulled McGill back within five, but Windsor responded with six-straight points, four of which came from some good low-post work by Roger, who converted a lay-up and two free-throws on back-to-back possessions.
 Roger and fellow second-year
Emily Prevost then exchanged baskets for the Lancers over the final minutes of the contest, pushing the spread well out of McGill's reach to solidify Windsor's fifth national banner in as many seasons.
