Ten Windsor Lancers were honoured at the 12th annual WESPY Awards on Monday night at the Caboto Club in Windsor.
The WESPY Awards recognize outstanding local athletes for their success and contribution to their respective sports. The awards were based on the athletes accomplishments during the 2016 calendar year.
Dual sport athlete Krystin Lawrence captured the overall Female Athlete of the Year award. An OUA first team all-star in women's soccer this past fall, Lawrence also led the league in scoring in the 2015-16 season en route to being named an OUA all-star in that sport as well.
The Lancers swept the volleyball category as Brad Gyemi captured the trophy on the men's side, and Shannon Dean brought it home for the women. Gyemi was named to the OUA all-rookie team following the 2015-16 season after leading the Lancers in total kills with 176, and averaging 3.09 per set. He placed second overall on the squad with 205.5 total points and had 85 digs throughout the season.
Dean was named an OUA first team all-star last season and was ranked in the OUA Top 5 for a number of statistical categories. She led the league in total points with 285.5 off 215 kills and a .378 hitting percentage through 19 matches. Dean also totaled 27 solo blocks and 31 service aces this season.
Lancer track & field coach
Brett Lumley was named the WESPY awards coach of the year. During the 2015-16 season, Coach Lumley led the Lancers to their second consecutive national championship title.
The Lancers also swept the track & field category as Stefanie Smith and Corey Bellemore were named the Dennis Fairall track & field athletes of the year. Both Smith and Bellemore were named all-Canadians in cross country as Stef led the Lancer women to their best finish in years while Corey was also named athlete of the year in track & field.
Lancer Football star Terrance Crawford captured the Gino Fracas Football Award, first year Lancer Abby Hunt brought home the Soccer Award after being named the OUA's women's soccer MVP, a first-team all-star and a U SPORTS all-Canadian, Lancer track & field alum Virginia McLachlan was named the female parasport athlete of the year for the fifth time, and Alex Campbell won the male Basketball Award.
