TORONTO (U SPORTS) –After a tough two days of competition, athletes were rounding the last turn on their last lap on the third and final day of the U SPORTS National Championships at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor, Ont. on Saturday Afternoon.

The Guelph women had another productive day as they remained well ahead of the pack for the entire day. The 4x200 relay team set a new facility record on their way to winning gold, knocking a hundredth of a second off the old record with their time of 1:37.97. in the field, Maja Naruszewicz secured another gold for Guelph with her performance in the high jump, clearing 1.74 meters. In the triple jump, Jordan Bates brought home some more hardware with her silver medal jump of 12.33 meters. This is Guelph's first national championship in track and field since 2013/14.

The Varsity Blues overtook the Windsor Lancers late in the day to claim second place for the meet. Lucia Stafford was able to run her way to second in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:25.69 while Emily Branderhorst brought in a silver medal in the high jump with leap of 1.74 meters.

The host Windsor Lancers went in to the final day in second place but once the final gun sounded the Lancer found themselves in third place. The day started off well for the Lancers with
Kelsey Balkwill setting a personal best while winning the 600-meter race in 1:29.37. Balkwill also anchored the 4x400 team that won gold in 3:42.88. The women also did well in the 4x200, capturing silver for the Blue and Gold.

On the men's side the Gryphons had first place essentially locked up before the day began. As the third day wound down the Gryphons added to their lead. In the field they captured silver and bronze when Thomas Nedow and Mark Bujnowski threw for 15.98 and 15.95 meters respectively. Thomas Land continued his dominance on the track, winning the 600-meter race in 1:19.41. Guelph also took home bronze in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:28.65 as well as in the 1500 meter run when Mostafa Elkurdy ran a 3:55.74 race. This is Geulph's second national championship in as many years.

In second after it was all said and done were the Alberta Pandas and Golden Bears. The Golden Bears dominated the relays, winning the 4x200 in 1:27.35 as well as the 4x400 in 3:17.46. Alberta also picked up a silver in the 1500-meter run with a 3:55.05-minute performance from Royden Radowitz.
Rounding out the final top three is the Laval Rouge et Or. The Rouge et Or took gold in the men's shot put on the strength of Simon Beaulieu's 16.42m throw. Laval also picked up a medal in the 600-meter when Vincent Duguay ran it in 1:19.75, good enough for third place.
Windsor's
Kelsey Balkwill was honoured as the U SPORTS meet MVP following a four medal performance at the championships. In addition to capturing three medals on the final day of competition, Balkwill also placed first overall in the women's 300m to bring her overall medal count to four.

For the men, Guelph's Tommy Land and Alberta's Austin Cole were named co-MVP's of the championship. Both played pivotal role's in their team's success throughout the championship. Guelph leader Dave Scott-Thomas was also honoured as the Dr. Bob Boucher Men's and Sue Wise Women's Coach of the Year for both the men's and women's teams, respectively.
