Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lancers tame Mustangs; Van Buskirk earns 60th career win

Parker Van Buskirk and the No. 6 Lancer men's hockey team rebounded from a rare loss with a shut-out of their own as they defeated the Western Mustangs 1-0 on Thursday night at Thompson Arena.

Windsor is now 19-4-1 on the season and holds a two-game lead over the Mustangs for first place in the OUA west division. Last night's loss was Western's second straight, and they are now 17-6-1 on the year, and continue to remain in second place in the west.

Van Buskirk made 25 solid saves in net for the Lancers while earning his 60th CIS career victory. The only goal of the game came in the second period off the stick of Sebastien Beauregard, as he was able to get his stick on a Chad Shepley point shot and bounce the puck past a helpless Greg Dodds.

The bodies were flying early in the game, with both teams making it clear that no check would go unfinished on the night. Windsor circled in the first frame but was unable to convert; registering the majority of chances despite firing the same amount of shots as Western with eight.

The Lancers took a few penalties early in the second and Western had good chances both on five-on-five and on the power play throughout the period. Lancer goaltender Parker Van Buskirk came up big a number of times when the Mustangs had the man advantage, highlighted by a timely glove save through traffic during the first infraction.

Western had a goal called back early in the third period after the officials decided that the goal did not fully cross the goal line.Van Buskirk was impressive in the third turning away chance after chance from a Mustangs team that kept finding ways to get the puck in close. Both goaltenders contributed to the quick pace of the game by demonstrating their slick puck handling skills, leaving the crease every chance they got to keep play flowing smoothly.

Windsor will take to the ice on Saturday night when they host the York Lions at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena. Saturday marks the department of athletics annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of this important cause. New commemorative t-shirts will be available for sale for $10 with all proceeds being donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
