The Lancer women's hockey team continues to battle for their first win in regulation after dropping a pair of games over the weekend to the Queen's Gaels and UOIT Ridgebacks.
Â
On Friday, the Lancers fell 4-1 to the Gaels before dropping a 5-3 decision to the Ridgebacks on Saturday. With the losses, the Lancers continue to remain in last place in the OUA standings with a 0-1-8-1 record.
Â
On Friday, the Gaels started with the majority of the pressure in the opening frame, with a few solid chances but goaltender
Ingrid Sandven stood tall for the Lancers. Windsor didn't test Gaels goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen too much, until the final minute she came up with a big save to keep the game at bay. The first period would end scoreless.
Â
The game's pace really picked up in the opening minute of the second period. The Gaels' Clare McKellar scored her first goal of the year to give the home team that critical first goal and a 1-0 lead. Each team continued to have chances as the game opened up a lot more in the middle frame. Big saves by both Lahonen and Sandven kept the game tight at 1-0 heading into the final period.
Â
In the opening minutes of the third period, the Gaels added took a 2-0 lead with a goal from Taryn Pilon. Windsor was able to capitalize on some sustained pressure half-way through the third frame as
Larissa Borowiec cut the Gaels lead in half 2-1.
Â
In the two minutes following Borowiec's goal, Queen's would find the back of the net two more times to secure the win.
Â
On Saturday against the Ridgebacks, the hosts scored four goals in the final twenty minutes to earn the 5-3 win.
Â
The Lancers held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period with goals from
Shailyn Waites and
Krystin Lawrence. After the Ridgebacks took a 3-2 lead just four minutes into the final period, captain
Erinn Noseworthy tied the game up with a short handed goal at 5:15.
Â
The Ridgebacks then scored two back to back goals at 6:07 and 6:37 of the frame to take a two goal lead, and although the Lancers applied consistent pressure to Ridgeback goaltender Cassie Charette, they were unable to find the back of the net.
Â
Windsor returns home next weekend to close out the first half of their season with a pair of games against the Brock Badgers on Friday night and the Gaels on Saturday. The puck will drop at 7:30pm on both nights and can be seen live at
