Toronto, Ont. – Fifth-year senior Khalid Abdel-Gabar (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a team high 20 points but it wasn't enough as the Lancers men's basketball team fell to the host Ryerson Rams 82-68 in the quarterfinals of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS men's basketball championship.
Â
With the loss, the No. 2-seeded Lancers will now play on Friday in the Consolation round against the Bishop's Gaiters at 4:00pm. The game can be seen live at
www.cis-sic.tv.
Â
Alex Campbell (Brampton, Ont.) chipped in 17 points for Windsor, while Rotimi Ostuntola Jr. (Windsor, Ont.) added 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Â
Ryerson was led by Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) who had 20 points, five assists, and five steals in the win. Adika Peter-McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) controlled the glass for Rams and had a game high ten defensive rebounds to go along with 19 points and was named the Player of the Game for Ryerson.
Â
Windsor struggled out of the gate against the hometown Rams and that was something Lancers head coach
Chris Oliver pointed to following the contest.
Â
"We just got off to such an unconfident start," Oliver said. "We needed to be better from the beginning and it snowballed from there."
Â
The Lancers, who came into the tournament first in CIS in total rebounds per game (45.0), were outrebounded by the Rams 49-39.
Â
"We needed a better inside presence which has been our foundation all year. We get to the free throw line a lot, we score inside. We just didn't get that going," Oliver said following the game.
Â
Second-year guard
Mike Rocca (Sarnia, Ont.) picked up two quick fouls to start the game and was forced to sit for the majority of the first quarter. Rocca, who averaged 23.9 minutes per game during the regular season, was limited to only 13 minutes of action on the night.
Â
Despite shooting only 15.8% from the field in the quarter, the Lancers trailed by only nine points at the end of the first.Â
Â
Ryerson would stretch the lead to as many as 18 points in the second quarter but as they did numerous times throughout the night, Windsor was able to hang around and cut the lead to just nine heading into halftime.
Â
"I thought we had moments where it seemed like we were getting back into it and back into a flow, but we just didn't get consistent scoring from anyone, " Oliver said. "You've got to score at this level to play against the good teams."
Â
With 7:20 remaining in the third quarter, the Lancers once again managed to close the gap to just eight points before the Rams started to pull away for good late in the quarter. Ryerson took a 65-44 lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back.
Â
Despite the loss, Oliver didn't want the result to overshadow everything the Lancers have accomplished as a team this season.
Â
"Certainly Ontario had a great year and a dominant year. We're not going to lose sight of the fact that we had a great year as well. We're really proud of our guys and what we did within Ontario but at the same time we're disappointed because we want to win here."
Â
Adbel-Gabar was named the Player of the Game for the Lancers.
