Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball opens 2016 with pair of losses

The Lancer men's volleyball team opened 2016 with a pair of losses to the Waterloo Warriors and Western Mustangs this past weekend.

They dropped a 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 20-25) decision to the visiting Waterloo Warriors in their first game of 2016 on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre, before falling 3-1 (26-24, 15-25, 18-25, 19-25) to Western on Sunday in London.

With the losses, the Lancers move to 3-9 on the season, and currently sit outside of a playoff spot in a tight division.

Against Waterloo, Windsor struggled in the first set defensively as the Warriors came out with a strong blocking game which stifled the usually dominate Lancer offence. In the second, former Lancer Greg Simone dominated the net for his new squad to help the visitors take the set 25-17. Windsor gained some momentum in the third going on a seven point run, but it is not enough and Waterloo clinch the final set for the win.

Trading points from the first serve, Western and Windsor were locked together at nine-all with neither team able to establish more than a two-point lead at any time.

The Lancers capitalized on fifth year Shawn Reaume's hands at the net to cut off the Mustang attack. When he was unable to stop the ball from crossing the net, Windsor's scrambled defence – led by Blasé Wasser – was able to continue the play.

While the Mustangs rounded the twenty-point mark with a small lead at 20-19, it only took minutes for the Lancers to push back ahead and take the set 24-26.

From there, the Lancers struggled against an energetic Mustang attack in the second set as the hosts easity won the set 25-15. Windsor stepped back on the floor for the third set with seemingly renewed motivation, sticking closer to the Mustangs score and performing at a level similar to that seen in the first set. However, the Mustangs also picked up their game to win the final two sets and take the game.

The Lancers will now break until Friday January 29 when they host the OUA champion McMaster Marauders at 8:00pm at the St. Denis Centre.
