Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball closes season with loss to Guelph

The Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team took to the court Sunday for their final game of the 2017-18 season after falling to the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 (10-25, 22-25, 17-25).

In addition to honouring departing seniors Carleigh Bailey, Emily McCloskey and Sabrina Safranyos, the Lancers were also trying to secure a playoff berth by beating the Guelph Gryphons at the St. Dennis Centre on Sunday. Despite senior day and a chance at the playoffs, the Lancers were soundly outplayed and lost the match in straight sets.

GAME STATS
The Lancers were led in kills by rookie Paige Phills, who had seven kills for the Blue and Gold.
Michaela Hellinga was a force for the Gryphons as she racked up 12 kills on the match with six coming in the first set.

In her last game in the Blue and Gold, Bailey went out leading all players in digs with 14. The Gryphons defense was paced by Tara Tanasijevic and her 12 digs.

The Gryphons dominated the service line as well, scoring six aces to the Lancers one. Alex Curran led the Gryphons with two aces and Brooke Davis picked up the Lancers' only ace.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers were in trouble early on as they struggled to contain the Gryphon attack early, forcing the Lancers to take a timeout down 8-6. Unfortunately, the Lancers problems persisted, coming out of the time out the Lancers struggled to keep the ball in play and went into the technical timeout down 17-7 and needing something to change fast if they were to win the set. The Gryphons however, let nothing change as they won the first set in dominating fashion, 25-10.

In the second set it was more of the same as the Lancers fell behind early 10-4 at the first timeout. The Lancers managed to stop the bleeding but still couldn't close the six-point gap, trailing at the second timeout as well. The Blue and Gold were much more competitive in the second set. Despite the fight showed by the Blue and Gold, Libby Donovan's five second set kills ensured a Gryphon victory, 25-22.

The Lancers came out of the gates in the third set looking like a totally different squad. The Lancers took their first lead of the game on two great plays at the net by Paige Phills and Emily McCloskey, forcing the Gryphons to take to a timeout. The timeout seemed to help the Gryphons as they were able to win the set and the match, 25-17.
