The Windsor Lancers women's basketball cruised to a 72-34 win over the Nipissing Lakers Saturday night in North Bay.
The Lancers offense struggled for a second straight day but the defense was its normal self, playing physical defense and owning the glass. The win moved the Lancers to 4-0 on the season.
GAME STATS
Jordan Gutt led all scorers on the night with 16 points on 40 per cent shooting. The Lakers were led by Natalie Martinez who scored seven points on 33 per cent shooting.
Olivia Osamusali led the effort on the glass bringing in nine boards for the Lancers. Nipissing's Kaylea Galipeau-Wilson led her team's effort, collecting eight rebounds.
The Lancers defense had quick hands today, doubling the Lakers in steals 8-4.
GAME FLOW
In the first half the Lancers offense hummed along at a respectable pace, making almost 42 per cent of their looks from the field.
Eve Uwayesu provided a huge spark off the bench in the early going, dropping 10 points on 80 per cent shooting in the first half. The Lakers on the other hand were stifled in the half, making just under 26 per cent of their looks from the field. After two quarters of play, only two Nipissing players had scored four points as the Lancers enjoyed a commanding 39-19 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Lancers interior offense cooled off quite a bit, however, they compensated for it with a much better performance from behind the three-point line in the second half. It was Gutt doing most of the scoring in the second half as she dropped 13 points on 55 per cent shooting in the half. Defensively, the Lancers doubled down in the second half, allowing just six points total in the third quarter. The Lancers defensive tenacity proved to be far too much for the Lakers to handle as the Blue and Gold took the game in dominant fashion, 72-34.
