Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey drops tough contest to host Blues

The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team were unable to score against Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night in Toronto, falling 4-0.

Windsor's goaltender Kristen Swiatoschik stopped 24 shots faced and saw more traffic from Toronto's skaters who fired 27 shots her way.

Blues goaltender Erica Fryer, a native of Windsor-Essex County, managed to turn aside all 16 shots faced from the Lancers at Varsity Arena in downtown Toronto.  Nikki McDonald scored twice for Toronto in the Windsor loss.

GAME FLOW
Natasha Athanasakos opened the scoring for the Varsity Blues at 2:36 of the first period beating Swiatoschik on the powerplay to put her team up 1-0 early in the game.  Toronto's second goal came off the stick of McDonald who cashed in on another Blues powerplay later in the period at 15:49. The Blues closed out the first period up 2-0 on the visiting Lancers.

In the second period, Toronto managed to hold possession for most of the period which had the Lancers getting a little sloppy in their play ultimately leading to another penalty for the blue and gold.  As a result, Katy McKenna picked up the third powerplay goal on the evening for the Blues at 8:49 to extend the Toronto lead to 3-0 for the home squad going into the second intermission.

The third period saw promise from the Lancers anxiously wanting to respond during the final 20 minutes of play.  However, Fryer stood tall in her crease to not allow a potential Lancer goal against and went on to backstop her team to the eventual victory over her hometown team.

Before that the Lancers decided to put out an extra attacker later in the period to put pressure on Fryer maintaining her shut out, but McDonald added her second goal of the game at 18:28 to secure the win over Windsor. The loss now puts the Lancers season record at 8-3-1 on the campaign.
