The No. 7 Lancer men's hockey team split their final weekend of 2022 action against the No. 8 TMU Bold.
Â
Windsor dropped a tight 3-2 contest in overtime on Saturday night at Adie Knox Arena before rebounding on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory back at home at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
Â
The Lancer head into the holiday break with a 11-2-2 record and currently sit in first place in the OUA west division.
Â
FRIDAY
Nathan Torchia turned aside 23 of 26 shots while
Anthony Stefano and
Grant Spence picked up a goal each.Â
Â
Anthony Stefano got the Lancers on the scoreboard first, lighting the lamp for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. native's lonesome tally would also extend his point streak to 13 games and provide the Lancers with the early one-goal lead.Â
Both teams would play out the remainder of the period with peak physicality and prominent points still up for grabs as the Lancers' marched to the dressing room still leading the Bold 1-0.
The two sides traded goals in the second period, however, with Windsor beating the Bold to the punch once more. Forward Grant Spence would tuck his fifth of the season just below the crossbar to double his side's lead nine minutes into the middle stanza.Â
Moments later, TMU cut the Lancers two-goal lead in half following a blue line blast firing off the stick of Aaron Hyman.
Connor Bowie tied the game up early in the third period to send the game into overtime. Kyle Bollers took a 2-on-1 pass from Zachary Shanker in the overtime and put it past Torchia to give the visitors the win.
Â
SATURDAY
Sean Olson,
Keegan McMullen, and
Grant Spence scored for the blue and gold, while Torchia was just about perfect in net, turning aside 32 of 33 shots faced.
Â
The intensity from game one seeped into game two on Sunday. After a series of hard hits and missed power play opportunities, the Bold jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal from Kevin Gursoy.Â
Â
Following the goal, the physicality between the two squads increased. A scrum near the 15-minute mark resulted in 58 of the game's whopping 70 penalty minutes at the end of the first period.Â
In the second, a couple of quick penalties by the Bold nine minutes into the middle frame gave Windsor a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Olson found the opening the blue and gold were searching for and blasted a shot past Bold goaltender Kair Edmonds to even up the game.Â
Â
Two minutes later, McMullen picked up second goal of the season to give Windsor their first lead of the game. The blue and gold found themselves up 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Â
The final period opened with the Lancers on the attack, controlling most of the play in the TMU end. Early into the third,
Robbie Burt worked his way up the ice to connect with
Grant Spence who fired a shot through traffic and in behind Edmonds, extending the blue and gold's lead to 3-1. As time expired, TMU was unable to get anything past Torchia and the Lancers secured the victory to finish the year on a high note.
