The Lancer men's hockey team swept their weekend series against the Guelph Gryphons at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
Â
In their first game of the weekend double-header on Friday, the Lancers came out on top with a 5-2 victory and followed that up with a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon.
Â
FRIDAY
Holden Wale led the Lancers offensively with a goal and two assists while
Sean Olson scored his ninth goal of the season and recorded an assist. Other Lancer goal scorers included
Brady Pataki,
Mason Kohn, and
John Wesley.
Â
Nathan Torchia made 32 saves in the victory.
Â
It didn't take long for the Lancers to open the scoring as Olson found the back of the net just 4:36 into the opening frame. Olson almost scored his second of the game just five minutes later, but Guelph's Colton Incze made a phenomenal save to keep it a one goal game. Pataki would capitalize on a power play opportunity at 17:34 of the period to give Windsor a two goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Â
Windsor continued to apply the pressure to start the second with multiple scoring opportunities that were turned aside by Incze. Their third goal once again came with the man advantage just three minutes into the period by Wale. The Lancers would continue to dominate the Gryphons, and goaltender
Nathan Torchia continuing to make incredible saves. The Lancers would strike again with a
Mason Kohn snipe at 9:09 of the period. Guelph would score two unanswered goals from Luke Kutkevicius and Luke Bignell before the period was out. Windsor went into the intermission, up 4-2.
The Lancers and Gryphons went back and forth in the third period. Pataki had yet another chance that Incze stopped in spectacular fashion. The Lancers were able to get their fifth and final goal with just two minutes left to play in the game. John Wessely would get his first on the season with an empty-net goal that was assisted by Pataki and
Ryan Barbosa.
Â
SATURDAY
In the first period, the blue and gold were off to an aggressive start with the same energy they had playing the day before. Within 48 seconds of the game,
John Wesley came out flying to score on Incze and take a 1-0 lead. As the Lancers remained on the attack after the first goal, the Gryphons started to apply pressure and control the puck. Things got intense between the two squads and Cole Cameron tied the game with four minutes to play in the frame.
Â
The second period continued with a similar intensity as the first and the blue and gold were yet again the first to strike. With Guelph's Ted McGeen in the box for slashing,
Ryan Barbosa fired the puck towards the net with Wesley grabbing the pass in front to give Windsor a 2-1 lead. A few minutes later, the Gryphons responded with their goal to tie the game, 2-2. With the Lancers on an offensive running streak, the Gryphons were forced on the defense as
Nolan Gardiner got his stick on the puck with a shot that slid wide. Going back and forth on the ice, both teams were prepared to settle the final score and attempt to take the win into the final period.
Â
In the final period, Windsor and Guelph were both determined to take a win. After Bramwell got a double-minor call for high sticking, this was a chance for the Lancers to take the lead back, but they had challenges to hold up against Guelph's strong defense. With eight minutes remaining,
Ryan Barbosa helped to claim back the lead they were hoping for to make the game 3-2. The best play of the game went to
John Wesley for his third goal and a hat trick to widen the lead. The last 46 seconds, Guelph was able to respond with one more goal but with time running out the Lancers swept the ice again for another victory in a final score of 4-3.
Â
Torchia had another solid night in net, recording 33 saves in the win. Incze had 24 for the visitors.
