Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lancers rebound against RMC after loss to Queen's

The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team visited the Limestone City up in Kingston this past weekend to take on the Queen's Gaels on Friday night and the RMC Paladins on Saturday afternoon for a two-game road trip in K-Town.

The blue and gold dropped a 7-2 decision to the Gaels on Friday but managed to recover on Saturday afternoon with an exciting 3-2 shootout victory over the Paladins on road ice.

FRIDAY STATS
Nic Pavia and Jake Durham scored on Friday in the loss to Queen's while Spencer Lecot and Jonathan Ulicny drew assists on the Pavia goal.

In the crease, Nathan Torchia and Dakota Lund-Cornish each appeared in attempting to guard the Lancer goal but were bombarded by a flurry of Queen's markers which made it difficult for them to help backstop the Lancers in the one-sided contest.  Lund-Cornish made 21 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
The Gaels offense came ready to go firing on all cylinders with five first period goals coming off the sticks of five different goal scorers.

Beginning at 2:02 of the first frame Holden Katzalay started the damage with his goal to put Queen's up 1-0.  A little over two minutes later at 4:45 Daniel Michaud scored to make it a 2-0 Queen's lead.  An additional Gael goal came under two minutes after that at 6:10 on the power play this time as Alex Robert made it a 3-0 lead for the tri-coloured squad.

Cameron Tolnai scored for the Gaels at 7:01 to make things worse for the Lancers who were beginning to feel somewhat shellshocked by the mirage of Gael goals coming at them in quick succession which then became a 4-0 Queen's lead.

The first period scoring was rounded out on the power play when Nolan Hutcheson notched his first goal on the night to make it a 5-0 Queen's lead at 15:01 and stayed in place up until heading into the dressing room for the first intermission.

Hutcheson would get back on the scoresheet at 10:46 of the second period when it became a 6-0 Gael lead on the blue and gold who were continuing to search for their first goal past Queen's goaltender Christian Purboo.

No other goals came in the second period as the bleeding saw the Lancers struggle, but they were able to break Purboo's shutout at 11:25 into the final frame when Pavia got on the board with his goal and made it a 6-         1 contest in favour of the Gaels.

A golden opportunity on the powerplay allowed the alternatively referred to as Golden Gaels the opportunity to remain shining with another goal which came from Samuel Marburg at 17:53 of the third period and put the home team up 7-1.

The Lancers would take one more goal to go to round out the disappointing night at Queen's with Durham's goal coming unassisted at 18:15 to close out the nine-goal night of scoring.

SATURDAY STATS
Durham and Mason Kohn each scored for the blue and gold in the first period.

Meanwhile Torchia had a solid bounce back performance in the Lancer crease backstopping his team to the eventual shootout victory with a 38 save total performance which includes the two key saves made in the shootout.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
In a game that the Lancers were eagerly looking to bounce back in from the night before's devasting loss against the Paladins cross-town rivals, they were able to open the scoring early at 2:57 of the first period when Kohn scored with helpers coming from Durham and Holden Wale's sticks to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

Durham would then make it a 2-0 lead for the Lancers at 9:19 of the first frame with assists coming from Hunter Holmes and Will Ennis on the second Windsor goal that allowed them to double up the score and leave the lead in place throughout the duration of the first period.

In the second period, Christopher Paquette of RMC cut the Lancer lead in half at 1:22 into the new frame with his goal to make it a 2-1 visitor lead.

The visitors would then cede their one goal advantage when Isaac Pascoal of the Paladins shot got past Torchia while RMC was on the power play with a man advantage to make it a 2-2 hockey game at 12:35 into the final period of regulation play.

The draw stayed in place well into the remainder of the period and even overtime was unable to solve the deadlock so off to a shootout it went to decide a winner in this contest.

Torchia became the star of the shootout stopping both RMC shooters while the Lancers were able to score some more past former Lancer netminder and now Paladin goaltender Michael Davis to close out the contest in dramatic fashion with 3-2 shootout victory to improve their record to 7-7 on the campaign.
