The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team took a trip to the Tri-Cities area to take on the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks on the weekend of October 10-11. The Lancers won 4-1 over Waterloo on Friday (Oct. 10) night before falling 4-3 to Laurier on Saturday (Oct. 11).
FRIDAY
Windsor continued their hot start to the season with a convincing 4-1 win in Waterloo, Ont. against the Warriors.
STATS
Colton Smith scored twice for Windsor, while
Keegan McMullen and
Matt McNamara also found the back of the net.
Aaron Shaw picked up two assists.
Max Donoso stopped 26 shots in the win.
Jesse Fishman scored the lone goal for the Warriors. Matt Onuska made 28 saves in the losing effort.
GAME FLOW
McMullen opened the scoring for Windsor early, scoring his third goal of the season just three minutes into the game after capitalizing on a turnover at the Warriors blueline, with Shaw and
Ty Toews drawing the assists. The Lancers kept the pressure up and Smith doubled the lead halfway through the frame.
The Lancers would hold on to their 2-0 lead until the third period. With three and a half minutes remaining in the game, Smith scored his second of the night off of a no-look pass from
Logan Linklater to extend the Windsor lead to three goals. Waterloo got on the board late on a power-play goal by Jesse Fishman, but an empty net goal by McNamara would restore the three goal lead and give the Lancers a 4-1 victory.
SATURDAY
The Lancers were unable to stop the red-hot Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night, falling 4-3 in a tightly contested back-and-forth contest at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in Waterloo, Ont. as the Golden Hawks remain undefeated on the season.
STATS
Keegan McMullen,
Dylan Schives, and
Owen Jones each found the back of the net for the Lancers, while
Ty Toews contributed with two assists. Windsor goaltender
Max Donoso stood tall between the pipes, finishing with 24 saves in the narrow loss.
Thomas Lenart scored twice for Laurier, while Tristan Malboeuf made 31 saves.
GAME FLOW
Laurier struck just five minutes into the first period, grabbing a 1–0 lead after a strong opening shift. The Golden Hawks quickly doubled their advantage with a one-timer from Lenart, putting Windsor on the back foot early.
Seconds after Laurier's second goal, Keegan McMullen pounced on a rebound and danced around the goaltender to tuck home his fourth of the season, cutting the deficit in half before the first intermission.
In the second period, Laurier regained their two-goal cushion with Lenart's second of the night, capitalizing on a power play and a fortunate deflection. Again, Windsor refused to back down. Defenseman
Dylan Schives cut through the middle of the ice on a slick setup from
Ty Toews, finishing with a smooth backhand to bring the score to 3–2, and Lancers completed the comeback late in the middle frame. With a delayed penalty coming and an extra attacker on the ice,
Owen Jones found himself in a prime scoring position and buried a point-blank shot to level the game before final frame.
Despite two Laurier penalties and sustained pressure, the Lancers couldn't find the go-ahead goal. Instead, it was the Golden Hawks who capitalized on a late opportunity, with Max-Antoine Melançon firing home the game-winner from the slot to give Laurier a 4–3 lead they would not relinquish.
The loss drops Windsor to 2–1 on the season, while Laurier remains perfect. The Lancers now turn their attention to a busy stretch ahead as they continue their lengthy road trip with back-to-back games next weekend. Windsor stops in Bowling Green, Ohio on Friday, Oct. 17 to face the CCHA's Bowling Green Falcons at 7 p.m., then travels to Guelph, Ont. to face the Gryphons on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:30p.m. The game against Guelph can be streamed online via oua.tv.
