Lancers earn crucial win in tight showdown in Waterloo

The University of Windsor Lancers men's basketball team earned an 85–80 road victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, January 16 at PAC n Waterloo, Ont. Windsor overcame an early deficit and a late push from the Warriors, using balanced scoring and efficient shooting to secure the win in a tightly contested OUA matchup. 

GAME FLOW
The game featured momentum swings throughout all four quarters. Waterloo edged Windsor 32–30 after the opening frame, but the Lancers responded defensively in the second quarter, holding the Warriors to just 13 points to take a slim halftime lead. Windsor extended control in the third quarter with a 22–11 run, creating separation heading into the final period. Waterloo mounted a comeback attempt in the fourth, outscoring Windsor 24–18, but the Lancers made timely baskets down the stretch to close out the five-point win.

Shooting efficiency proved to be a key difference in the game. Windsor finished shooting 51.6% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range, compared to Waterloo's 50.0% shooting and 31.8% from beyond the arc. The Lancers also capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 75.0% of their attempts, while Waterloo shot 68.8%. Waterloo held a 36–29 rebounding advantage, but Windsor's ability to limit turnovers and score efficiently in key moments defined the outcome. 

STATS
Windsor was led by Emanuel Otong, who scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Luke Grace added 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Yohann Sam provided a strong spark off the bench with 18 points, including three three-pointers. Bronson Chambers contributed 12 points and a game-high seven assists to anchor the Lancers' offense, and Marodama Benjamin chipped in 11 points on an efficient 4-of-5 shooting night. 

For Waterloo, Isaiah McRae led the Warriors with 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Arshya Ghasemi added 15 points off the bench, and Thach Wal Nger finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. McRae and Ghasemi were central to Waterloo's late push, but the Warriors were unable to fully erase the third-quarter deficit.

With the win, Windsor improves to 7–7 on the season. The Lancers will look to build on this momentum as they continue their road trip on Saturday (Jan. 17) at the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. The 8 p.m. tip-off can be seen live on oua.tv.
