Despite an inspiring effort behind a passionate crowd, the University of Windsor men's soccer team dropped their opening match 4-1 against the reigning U SPORTS champions, the York Lions on Friday, August 28 at Alumni Stadium.

York's scoring outburst was led by English major and former Rutgers Scarlet Knights student Anthony Morano, who scored in the 11th minute and right before halftime. Christian Zeppieri scored on a penalty shot in the 54th minute to put the Lions up 3-1 before Marco Sciortino added a fourth 25 minutes later.
On the other side, first-year engineering student Ryan Hickson, second-year Odette School of Business student Omar Soufan, and fourth-year computer science major Ciaran O'Connor generated the most high-danger chances in front of York goalkeeper Michael Williams, highlighted by a goal by Ottavio Liburdi in the 42nd minute. However, the blue and gold we unable to break York's quick-strike ability in transition, who ultimately posting nine shots.
Beyond the goals, fans were treated to a highly physical event, as both teams recorded three yellow cards each — the first foul was even recorded roughly 30 seconds into the game.

Ottavio Liburdi scored the first Lancer goal of the season, with Ciaran O'Connor assisting. Matthew Chimienti led the Lancers in overall offensive chances with two shots and one on target. Anthony Morano had three shots and two goals for York, while Christian Zeppieri scored once on two shots.

Up next, Windsor will travel to Laurier to play the Golden Hawks on Sunday, August 30 for a 6:15 p.m. start before returning home on Friday, September 4 at 8:15 p.m. to host the Waterloo Warriors.
