The Windsor Lancers Men's Basketball team completed a successful three-game set out west this past weekend which included a pair of victories over UFV and Simon Fraser.
On Saturday night, Coach Oliver's squad closed out their Canada West exhibition tour with an impressive 89-82 victory over Simon Fraser University.
The first half was a see-saw battle as Windsor saw a 10 point lead quickly evaporate, as they trailed 37-27 at the break.
The Lancers then went on a second-half surge as they outscored SFU 28-19 in the third quarter and 24-16 in the fourth to earn the hard fought victory. A 10-2 run midway through the fourth was the difference for Windsor as they built up a ten-point advantage in the final minutes to earn the road win.
Windsor was 8 for 11 from the three-point line in the second half as they hit their stride at the offensive end.
Nigel Johnson-Tyghter continued his impressive play as he scored a game high 20 points and added 8 rebounds for the Lancers. Monty Hardware added 13 points while Matt Handsor chipped in with 12 points.
In their second game of the west coast tour on Friday night, the Lancers were defeated 77-70 by the UBC Thunderbirds.
UBC turned a 13 point lead at the half into a 19 point advantage heading into the final quarter en route to the victory.
Despite falling behind early, the Lancers showed a lot of character in the second half as they came all the way back and cut the deficit to just one point in the fourth quarter.
Windsor used a 29-11 run over the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter to pull within a single point at 71-70 before the T-Birds responded with a 6-0 run to close out the win.
Johnson-Tyghter led the Lancers again with 17 points, while Isaac Kuon added 16 points and rookie point guard Josh Collins chipped in with 14 points.
Early in the week, Windsor opened up their Canada West tour as they defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 79-70 in the first game their three-game series.
The Lancers held a 40-35 lead at the half, and stretched the lead to 10 points by the end of three quarters of play.
Fraser Valley outscored Windsor 15-14 in the final quarter to cut into the lead but eventually fell to the Lancers 79-70.
Windsor enjoyed consistent shooting throughout the game, firing at 48 percent in both halves.
Isaac Kuon was 8 of 13 from the floor for 17 points to lead Windsor while Lien Phillip added 16 points and Nigel Johnson-Tygther finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Monty Hardware also contributed 12 points in the victory.
The Lancers will open their 2009-10 regular season on Friday, November 6th as they host the York Lions at 8pm at the St. Denis Centre.
