National Champs capture Darcel Wright Tournament in Toronto

The defending CIS national champion Lancer Women's Basketball team got their 2011-12 exhibition schedule started with a bang as they won the Darcel Wright Tournament in Toronto over the weekend.

The Lancers knocked off Ryerson 88-69 in Sunday's final to claim the tournament title. Miah Langlois was named the tournament MVP while Bojana Kovacevic was named a tournament all-star.

The Darcel Wright tournament featured an impressive field of competition as four of the eight teams who qualified for nationals last year were competing.

In the tournament final, fourth-year guard Bojana Kovacevic led the Lancers with 20 points while post Iva Peklova added 17 points. Peklova was named the player of the game in the championship final.

Second year guard Korissa Williams also chipped in with 10 points against the Rams.

Windsor advanced to the final by defeating Laval 76-54 in the semi-finals on Saturday. Jessica Clemencon led the way with 19 points against Laval while tournament MVP Miah Langlois added 17 points.

To open the tournament, the Lancers knocked off last year's CIS runner-ups, the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Lancers will next battle Eastern Michigan on Sunday in more exhibition action and then will participate in the Dino Classic on Oct. 28-30 in Calgary.
