Diloreto leads Lancers to 86-81 victory over Laurentian in season opener

Box Score The Windsor Lancers Men's Basketball team won their 2011-12 season opener on Friday night with a hard fought 86-81 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs at the St. Denis Centre.

Windsor was paced by third year guard Enrico Diloreto who led all scorers with 33 points on 13 of 22 shooting. He also chipped in 6 rebounds and four steals in an impressive performance in the home opener.

With the victory, the Lancers move to 1-0 in conference play and will now host the York Lions on Saturday night in game-two of the weekend set.

On Friday night, the Lancers and Voyageurs went back and forth throughout the first quarter as they traded baskets early on. Windsor built a small lead in the opening frame and led 19-17 after one quarter.

The home team opened up their lead in the second quarter as rookie forward Junior Osuntola converted on a couple of nice fast break opportunities as they built a 10-point lead.

The Lancers extended to a 15-point lead late in the first half before the Voyageurs cut it to nine at the break, 39-30. The Lancer lead could have been bigger but struggles from the free throw line (5-19) kept the game in range.

Laurentian would mount a charge in the third quarter and took a short-lived lead midway through before the Lancers once again regained control at the end of the frame. Enrico Diloreto was a force from outside and also driving to the basket as he put his team back on top 61-55 heading in final quarter.

The final ten minutes of the contest was a battle as the two teams traded leads throughout the quarter. Laurentian's Manny Pasquale and Windsor's Josh Collins traded baskets from long range late in the game before Enrico Diloreto put his team ahead for good in the final minutes.

An acrobatic three-point play by Diloreto sealed the victory as the Lancers earned the 86-81 win.

For Windsor, rookie Junior Osuntola also had a strong game for the Lancers as he finished with 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting and added 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

Evan Matthews added 13 points for the home team and Josh Collins chipped in with 15 points and 9 assists. Lien Phillip finished with 8 points and game-high 19 rebounds.

The Lancers will now tip-off against the York Lions on Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre. Game time is set for 8pm.
