Box Score The Windsor Lancers Women's Basketball team opened their 2011-12 regular season in style with a convincing 76-32 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
The #2 ranked Lancers move to 1-0 in conference play and will host the York Lions on Saturday night in game two of the weekend doubleheader.
Prior to Friday night's game, the Department of Athletics honoured last year's CIS championship team with a special pre-game ceremony that included a ring presentation and the raising the national championship banner. Members of the 2010-11 Lancer team received their rings from University of Windsor President Dr. Alan Wildeman and U of W alumnus and President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Richard Peddie.
On the court, both teams came out with lots of energy in the season opener as the Lancers built an early 11-7 first quarter lead.
After a quiet offensive start to the contest, Windsor would completely take over in the second quarter as they outscored the Voyageurs 27-9 to built a commanding 38-16 halftime lead. The Lancers got some strong post play from CIS Player of the Year
Jessica Clemencon as they steadily increased their lead throughout the quarter.
The Lancers continued to apply the pressure in the second half as their superior size and skill allowed them to dominate both ends of the floor. Guards Miah Langlois and
Bojana Kovacevic would connect from long range as the home team extended their lead to 40 points in the second half.
Coach Vallee was able to get all of her dressed players into the line-up and got strong performances from rookies Tess Kreiger and
Anna Mullins. Kreiger finished with 6 points and 4 rebounds while the younger Mullins connected on a pair of triples for 6 points.
In the victory, Windsor was led by
Jessica Clemencon who finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Miah Langlois added 14 points, 6 steals and 4 assists while
Bojana Kovacevic chipped in with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Korissa Williams was a factor at both ends of the court as she dished out 7 assists and hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Lancers will be back in action on Saturday night when they host the York Lions at 6pm at the St. Denis Centre.
