Lancers defeat Cape Breton in regional semi-final; qualify for CIS Championships

Peklova had a game high 10 rebounds in the Lancers win
Box Score The Lancer women's baskebtall team defeated the Cape Breton Capers 83-70 on Friday night in the CIS East Regional semi-finals to advance to the regional final on Saturday.

Windsor will play the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the regional final on Saturday night at 6:00pm. With the Gee Gees already advancing to the CIS Championships as the Ontario Champion, the Lancers automatically earn the regional berth to nationals.

The Lancers opened the game with a quick 5-0 run before the Capers chipped away to tie the game at seven. The quarter remained tight as Windsor held a mere two point lead after the first ten minutes.

Windsor opened the second quarter with 14 unanswered points, setting themselves up with a comfortable double digit lead over the Capers.

Leading 44-31 at the half, the Lancers held the Capers to just eleven third quarter points and carried a 65-42 lead heading into the final quarter.

With their three-point perimeter shooting suddenly finding its mark, the Capers chipped away at the Lancers' lead to come within four points in the final four minutes.

Though tested, Windsor found an answer and emerged from the Caper's fourth quarter flurry with a double digit lead once again, claiming the win thanks large in part to ace free throw shooting from Jessica Clemencon down the stretch.

Windsor dominated the boards throughout the game, with 52 total rebounds compared to the Capers' 32. Player of the game for Windsor, Clemencon led the Lancers in scoring with a high 30 points. Iva Peklova had a game high 10 rebounds in the win.

Following Saturday's game, the Lancers will travel to Calgary next week for the CIS Championships March 17-19th.
