Mustangs edge No. 6 Lancers on Rivalry Night

Box Score The No. 6 Lancer men's hockey team lost just their second game in regulation time on Wednesday night when they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Western Mustangs.

Windsor heads into the Christmas break with a 14-2-1 record and in sole possession of first place in the OUA west division, while the Mustangs close out the fall with a 13-3-1 record and are in second place in the standings behind the Lancers.

Special teams were the story of the night as five goals were scored with the extra man.

Western got on the board first at 4:33 of the first period with a power play goal from Julian Cimadamore.

First year Lancer Dylan Denomme evened the score with Windsor's first PP goal at 14:04 of the opening frame before Spencer Pommells notched his 11th of the season at 18:51 to give Windsor the lead heading into the second period.

Ryan Green gave Windsor a two goal lead with a bullet from the slot, again on the power play, to give Windsor a 3-1 lead seven minutes into the second period.

On a five minute power play after Lancer captain Drew Palmer was sent to the box for checking from behind, the Mustangs cut their deficit to one with a power play marker of their own with nine minutes left in the second.

In the third, Western's Luke Karaim scored two unanswered goals on Windsor goaltender Parker Van Buskirk to take a 4-3 lead with just under a minute remaining in regulation.

Head coach Kevin Hamlin called a time out and pulled Van Buskirk in favour of the extra attacker in an attempt to secure the tying goal. Pommells nearly sent the game into extra time but Mustangs goaltender Greg Dodds denied the CIS leading scorer by stacking the pads and preserving the Mustangs lead.

The Lancers were 100% on the power play going three-for-three, while the Mustangs went two-for-five with the extra attacker.

Van Buskirk made 15 saves in the loss, while Dodds had 22 saves for the Mustangs.

Windsor will now break for the holiday season and will return to regular season action on January 9th when they travel to Laurentian for a pair of games against the Voyageurs.
