In their opening weekend of competition, the Lancer women's volleyball team split their first two games of the season.

The Blue & Gold fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 14-25) to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in London before rebounding on Sunday to sweep the Brock Badgers 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-15) in their home opener at the St. Denis Centre.

The Lancers are now 1-1 on the season heading into their Halloween match-up against the Guelph Gryphons (1-1) on Saturday afternoon in Guelph.

In the season opener, the Mustangs took a quick lead early in the first set before the Lancers went on a 5-point run to tighten the score to 8-7.

While the Lancers were able to stay within two points of the Mustangs for most of the set, they were unable to catch them, falling 21-25.

The second set saw the Lancers sticking tight to Western, with the teams often trading points one-for-one. It wasn't until the score was tied at 20-20 that Windsor was able to put up and maintain a steady lead. A series of kills put the Lancers over the top to bring the second set to 25-21.

Returning to the floor for the third set, the Lancers used their momentum to rapidly establish a 5 point lead over Western. The Mustangs responded by outscoring their opponents 6-1 to tie the set at 6-6.

Windsor once again built a respectable lead over the hosts before the Mustangs once again tied it 12-12, en route to a 25-19 set victory.

The fourth set began with an exchange of points before Western began to distance themselves from Windsor. With a score of 14-7 in favour of the Mustangs, Western dominated at the net, putting up an additional six blocks in the final set. At the final whistle, Western was up 25-14 to capture the fourth set, and the match.
In the confines of the St. Denis Centre on Sunday the Lancer controlled the game from the start. Transfer setter
Lauren Stirling created a versitle offense through the first set setting up eight kills while the Badgers struggled to generate any offense.Â
In the second, Brock came out stronger keeping the game close until the Lancers found their groove again and pull ahead with a six point streak to increase their lead to 22-15, en route to a 25-18 win.Â
Throughout the third,
Emily McCloskey stepped up to make crucial blocks to diminish any offense the Badgers may have generated. Holly Clark came in at the end of the set to earn four points with her serve and win the game for the Blue & Gold.Â
Shannon Dean led the offense with 9 kills, while Jade Zeibarth contributed 6 kills and 10 digs. Stirling finished the game with 25 assists and 12 digs.Â
