Windsor, ON – The Lancer women's hockey team dropped their first game of the OUA quarter-finals 3-2 to the Toronto Varsity Blues Thursday night at South Windsor Arena.
Â
With the loss, the Lancers now trail the Blues 1-0 in their best of three series. Game two is scheduled for 2:00pm on Saturday in Toronto. Game three, if necessary, will go at 3:30 on Sunday, also in Toronto.
Â
The Blues opened the scoring on the power play midway through the first period as Kassandra Roache skated out from behind the net and snuck the puck past Windsor netminder
Marissa Kozovski.
Â
The Lancers evened the score two minutes later when
Erinn Noseworthy scored on the man advantage and Windsor took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes with a goal off the stick of
Jillian Rops.
Â
Blues defenceman April Looije evened the game up just 4:10 into the second frame, banging in a rebound off an Autumn Garnham point shot on the power play.
Â
Deadlocked at two heading into the third period, Sonja Weidenfelder netted the game winner for the Blues at 6:24 of the frame. Despite a number of opportunities, the Lancers ended the game short-handed and were unable to come up with the equalizer.
