Hamilton, ON – The Lancer men's volleyball team lost a heartbreaking five set game 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 11-15) to the York Lions in the OUA bronze medal game on Saturday evening at the Burridge Gym.
Â
With the loss, the Blue & Gold closed out their most successful season in decade.
Â
Coming out of the first set technical, with the Lions leading 16-10, Windsor went on a 7-2 run to bring the game back within one and forcing the Lions to call a timeout. From there, Windsor chipped away at the Lions lead and came from behind to take the very close set 25-23.
Â
York opened the second set with a 6-4 run before the Lancers regrouped and led 16-14 at the technical time out. The Lancers continued to lead for the remainder of the frame en route to a 25-21 win.
Â
As in the second, the Lions opened the third set with an early run before the Lancers were able to retaliate and get back in the game. With the Lions leading 16-11 at the technical, the Lancers put in a solid effort but were unable to surpass the Lions, falling 25-20 in the set. Â
Â
The Lions seemed too much for the Lancers in the fourth set, as they controlled the set from the beginning to earn the set victory and send the game into a fifth and deciding set.
Â
In the fifth, the Lancers re-grouped and put on display an effort that showed why they have been so successful in the second half of the season. However, with a possible match point for York, the officials made a questionable call on the line, awarding the Lions the point and as a result, the game.
Â
Congratulations to the team on a fantastic season. The Lancer family is very proud.Â
