Men's Hockey drops game one to Gryphons

Windsor, ON – In game one of the OUA West Final, the No. 7 nationally ranked Lancer men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Guelph Gryphons.

The Gryphons hold a 1-0 lead in the best of three series heading into game two on Friday night in Guelph. Game three will take place in Windsor on Saturday evening, if necessary.

The Lancers controlled most of the play in the first period until Guelph was sent on the power play late in the frame. With under a minute to play, the Lancers failed to clear the puck out of their end and Nick Trecapelli slid the puck between Parker Van Buskirk's legs to put the Gryphons up 1-0 going into the second period.

Early in the second, it was another Lancer giveaway that ended up on the stick of Mike Hasson and he fired the puck into the top corner to beat Van Buskirk.

Just two minutes later the Lancers cut the lead to one as Spencer Pommells won the faceoff outside the Guelph blue line and sent Ryan Green into their zone, where he beat Andrew D'Agostini glove side.

Late in the second period the Gryphons' Trecapelli sent a shot wide of the net, which bounced of the boards and back out front, onto the stick of Carlos Amestoy, who tapped in a goal to give Guelph a 3-1 lead.

The third period was scoreless despite some last minute chances by the Lancers when they pulled Van Buskirk in favour of the extra man.

D'Agostini finished with 35 saves in the game, while Van Buskirk had 27 in the loss.

Game two can be seen live on oua.tv at 7:30pm on Friday evening.
