Lancers fall in low scoring game to Blues

The Windsor Lancer football team dropped a low scoring 8-7 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Labour Day Monday at Varsity Centre in Toronto.

This is Windsor's first loss to the Blues since 2001 and are now 0-2 on the season. They will look for their first win of the year this coming Saturday when they host the Carleton Ravens (1-1) at Alumni Field.

Fourth year running back Tarrence Crawford led the Blue & Gold with 105 rushing yards on 15 carries and 38 yards in the air. Quarterback Casey Wright finished the game going 15-for-27, 126 yards and 1 interception. On the ground, first year Lancer Jaydon Gauthier led the Lancers in the air with 40 yards.

Defensively, rookie Devon Woods had an outstanding game for Windsor and was named the Lancers player of the game. The Windsor, ON native finished the game with six solo tackles (6.5 total tackles), and one sack for 10 yards.

In a game without a single touchdown, Toronto opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a 29-yard field goal to take a three point lead heading into the second.

Windsor tied the game up on their first drive of the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal from second year kicker Hugh Paulin. Paulin, a Windsor native, gave the Lancers the lead on the team's next drive with a 20-yard field goal. Windsor led 6-3 heading into the half.

In the third, Windsor conceded a safety to bring the Blues within one. An 18-yard field goal six minutes later gave Toronto a one point, 8-6, lead heading into the final quarter. A Windsor rouge in the fourth closed out the scoring.

The Lancers will host the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 12th at Alumni Field at 1:00pm. Tickets for the game are available at the gate that day starting at 12:00pm, and can also be seen live on TVCogeco Cable 11 and www.oua.tv.
