Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer falls to McMaster and York

The Lancer women's soccer team dropped both games of their weekend road trip to the McMaster Marauders and York Lions.

On Saturday, the women dropped a tight 1-0 loss to the Marauders before falling 2-1 to York on Sunday. The women are now 1-3 heading into their first set of home games next weekend.

Against the Marauders, the two teams looked to be well matched in the opening half, and each was able to craft its fair share of scoring opportunities. Windsor's best scoring chance of the half  came in the 31st minute, when Lancer midfielder Paiten Stephens thumped a heavy shot just wide of the home side's far post.

Nine minutes later, it was the hosts who found the game's opening tally, as Maila Carboni netted the game's lone goal by chesting down a bouncing ball in the box, turning and firing a well-placed shot into the top corner of the Windsor net.

On Sunday, the first half saw the Lions control the pace of the game by dominating the possession of the ball. Windsor regrouped at halftime and came out stronger in the final forty-five minutes.

In the 54th minute in the second half, the Lancers opened the scoring with a tally poked by York goalkeeper Taylor Grant after a defensive breakdown that led to an odd-man advantage in the direction of York's net, ultimately leading to the opening goal by Lacey Marcoux.

York's Nour Ghoneim scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute after York drew a foul inside the box. Ghoneim stepped up and placed the ball into the right hand corner of the net, which was just out of the reach of sprawling Windsor keeper Krystin Lawrence.

Freshman Kiyani Johnson came on in the second half scoring the Lion's go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute to take the lead. Windsor pressed for the equalizer but was unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

Windsor will play their first home games of the season this coming weekend when they host the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks. The Warriors come to town Friday, September 11th at 6:00pm while the Hawks head down the 401 on Sunday, September 13th at 1:00pm.
