The Lancer women's hockey team let a two-goal lead slip away and fell 3-2 to the Toronto Varsity Blues in overtime on Saturday night in Toronto.
Â
With the loss, Windsor falls to 6-1-10-2 while the No. 6 Varsity Blues improve to 8-3-4-3.
Â
Shawna Lesperance accepted a pass from
Krystin Lawrence and Natalie Barette to open the scoring just 2:42 into the opening period.
Â
After having another goal called back, Lawrence registered her second point of the night and tenth goal of the season with a power play goal at 12:10. Lesperance was credited with the assist as the Lancers went into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Â
The middle frame was all Varsity Blues as they scored a pair of goals of their own to deadlock the game at two. Team captain Kristi Riseley got the Blues on the board 3:47 into the second period, tipping in a Rebecca Bourgeois point shot on the powerplay.
Â
10 minutes later, second-year forward Megan O'Brien notched her third goal in two games, tying the game on a loose puck in front of the net.
Â
With neither team able to penetrate the solid goaltenders in each net in the third period, the game headed into overtime. Toronto's Sonja Weidenfelder scored 1:17 into overtime on a one-time pass from Taylor Day to lift the hosts over the visiting Lancers.

Windsor will return home next week to host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday February 5th on Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend. Puck drops at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena and the game can be seen live at
