Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball splits weekend contests

The Lancer women's volleyball team played a pair of strong games over the weekend, splitting their home games at the St. Denis Centre.

Windsor took the No. 6 ranked McMaster Marauders to five sets on Friday night, before falling 3-2 (27-25, 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 12-15) and then rebounded on Saturday evening to sweep the visiting Guelph Gryphons 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-21).

On Friday night, the Lancers came out with a strong defensive game that surprised the national ranked Marauders. The Marauders struggled offensively in the set, and some strong serving from Jade Zeibarth lifted the Lancers over the visitors to take the set.

After another strong set in the second, the Lancers fell behind McMaster early on. Three consecutive kills from Shannon dean rejuvenated Windsor late in the set but they were unable to come back to earn the win. The Lancers are now 8-5 on the season and sit in third place in the OUA west division.

Windsor played another strong pair of sets, but the Marauders experience led the to take final two sets and the game.

Dean led the Blue & Gold with 10 kills, four solo blocks and 17 points.

On Saturday, Windsor came out firing on all cylinders, stunning the Guelph Gryphons and taking the set easily 25-14.

The Gryphons re-grouped in the second and held the Lancers to just 8 kills in the frame. However their 12 unforced errors proved to be the difference in the set as Windsor held on to take the match.

Despite Guelph taking an early lead in the third, Carleigh Bailey served six consecutive points to give the Lancers a 16-8 lead at the technical time out. From there the Lancers got a little stagnant allowing Guelph to inch their way back into the game, before Melissa Smyth closed out the set with a number of consecutive serves to take the game.

The Lancers had a more balanced attack on Saturday with Dean leading the way with 8 kills, while Smyth was right behind her with 7 and Emily McCloskey and Zeibarth each contributing five.

The Lancers will return home next weekend for their final pair of home games of the regular season. They will host the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday on Breast Cancer Awareness Day at 1:00pm, before hosting the York Lions on Sunday on Senior's Day at 1:00pm.
