The Lancer men's hockey team opened up the 2016 portion of their schedule with a 4-0 loss to the York Lions on Friday night at South Windsor Arena.

With the loss, the Lancers drop to 9-7-2 on the season and remain tied for third place in the OUA west division with the Western Mustangs, while the Lions improve to 11-5-3 and sit atop the division.

After a scoreless first period, York opened the scoring in the second on a goal from Derek Sheppard at 5:20. York then doubled their lead a minute later at 6:35Â on a power play goal scored by Justin Larson, with assists credited to Greg Milner and Sheppard.

The Lions extended their lead to 3-0 with another power play goal by Milner at 13:54 of the frame. They added a fourth midway through the final period on a goal by Nicholas Greiser.

Blake Richard made 36 saves in the loss, while York's Chris Perugini made 34 saves to register the shut-out.

The Lancers will look to rebound on Saturday when they host the Brock Badgers at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena.Â
