Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lancers earn three points in weekend doubleheader

It was a tough weekend for the Lancer men's hockey team, but the Blue & Gold came away with three points of a possible four.

Windsor dropped a 2-1 decision in a shootout on Friday night against the Laurier Golden Hawks, before rebounding to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.

The Lancers are now 7-6-1 on the season and in a three way tie for third place in the OUA west division standings.

FRIDAY VS LAURIER
After a scoreless first period that saw the Golden Hawks out-shot the Lancers 16-11, Laurier finally managed to get past Windsor goaltender Kris Joyce 17 minutes into the second. Andrew Fritsch accepted a pass from Danny Hanlon and Alex Adams to put the Hawks up by one. The Lancers had a number of opportunities to get on the board including a couple of breakaways, but the Hawks goaltender Colin Furlong was solid in net for the visitors.

Windsor finally managed to get past Furlong shortly into the third when Ian Faubert notched his first OUA career goal at 3:28 to tie the game.

In the two overtimes, Windsor had a number of chances, including a couple on the powerplay, but was unable to get past Furling. The Golden Hawks best chance to win the game came in the second OT when they crowded around Joyce, but he managed to keep the put on the right side of the line.

In the shootout extra attempts were needed to determine the night's victor.

Joyce finished the night with 39 saves, while Furling made 29 in the win.

SATURDAY VS WATERLOO
The Lancers erased a third period deficit, and defenceman Todd Ratchford scored in double overtime to give Windsor a 4-3 victory at the South Windsor Arena.

Steve Anthony, Dylan Denomme, and Justice Dundas scored in regulation for the Lancers. Sebastian Beauregard chipped in with two helpers, while Kris Joyce made 29 saves in the Windsor net.

The Warriors came out the more energetic club in the first period, and they earned the game's first goal when Phillip Fife kept on a 2-on-1 and beat Joyce 5-hole.

Later in the opening frame, the Lancers got goals from Anthony and Denomme just 1:12 apart to claim a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short-lived though, as Zac Coulter knocked in his own rebound on the man advantage, making the score 2-2 after 20 minutes.

The Waterloo power play struck for the second consecutive time midway through the second. This time Riley Sonnenburg fired a shot from the high slot past Joyce to make it 3-2 Waterloo after two periods.

Dundas knotted the game up 3-3 early in the third, finishing a gorgeous individual effort with a backhander that squeezed through Hurry. Both clubs had a chance to find the winner late in the third and throughout the first overtime, but Ratchford earned the win for Windsor when he powered a one-timer past Hurry early in the second overtime frame.
