The Lancer women's volleyball team closed out 2016 by splitting their weekend doubleheader with the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the St. Denis Centre.

Windsor earned a three set 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-14) win on Friday night before the Thunderwolves came away with their first win of the season on Saturday defeating the Lancers 3-1 (23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22).

The split leaves Windsor with a 3-4 record heading into the holiday break, while Lakehead still sits in last place in the west division with a 1-9 record.

FRIDAY
It was a tight game from the beginning of the first set between the Lancers and the 'Wolves. By the technical timeout Windsor led 16-13 but the 'Wolves quickly came back and took the lead 21-18. The Lancers bounced back and the two teams went point-for-point at the end of the set with the Lancers coming out on top 29-27.

Windsor started the second set with a 5-1 run but the 'Wolves again came back to take a 15-10 lead. The Lancers regrouped and came back with some big runs that led them to win the set 25-20.

In the third set, the 'Wolves once again had the lead at the beginning but Windsor was able to come from behind and win the match 25-16.

Melissa Smyth led the Blue & Gold with 14 kills.

SATURDAY
The 'Wolves came out strong taking the lead from the get-go. The Lancers spurred back making it a tight game with both teams going point for point. A kill by Robinson earned the 25-23 set win for Lakehead.

At the technical timeout of the second set the Lancers led 16-15. Lakehead battled hard against the Lancers and held a slight lead at 23-20 which they held on to, taking the second set 25-23.

Windsor came to life in the third set and quickly built an early 6-3 lead. They built on that momentum throughout the remainder of the set and easily earned the win 25-14.

Lakehead came out strong at the beginning of the fourth until Windsor came back to take the lead 14-10. From there, the visitors battled back to tie the game at 19, and eventually take a three point lead, holding on to win the set and the match 25-22.

Smyth again finished the day with 14 kills alongside teammate Lexi Pollard who also had 14 kills.

The Lancers will now break for the holidays and return to regular season action on Sunday, January 15th when they host the Western Mustangs at 1:00pm. Â
