Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball opens season with pair of loses

The Lancer men's volleyball team opened the 2016-17 season with a pair of losses over the weekend at the St. Denis Centre.

Windsor fell in three straight sets 3-0 (23-25, 12-25, 14-25) to the Waterloo Warriors in the season opener on Friday night before falling 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 16-25) to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon.

Friday vs Waterloo

In the first set, the Lancers played smart offensively looking for the holes in the Waterloo defense and capitalizing on their opportunities. However, the Warriors are persistent in their game and work their way back to tie the game and eventually take the set.

Windsor struggled on serve-receive early in the second set which provided easy opportunities for the Warriors to build a quick lead and take the set. Waterloo continued to control the game throughout the third set and easily won the game.

Brad Gyemi led the Lancer offence with 11 kills and 3 digs, while Gabriel Burlacu had 4 kills, one block and 5 digs and John Moate had 2 kills, 1 block and 4 digs.

Saturday vs Guelph

After a slow start that saw the Gryphons take an early lead, Gyemi and Moate led a Lancer offence that battled back to tie the game late. Gyemi then served six straight points and had three huge kills to take the win.

Guelph retaliated with a strong attack in the second set that was led by Gregory Olejnik and Zackary Newman that bled into the remainder of the game. Windsor had another strong set in the third, but it was not enough as the Gryphons won the fourth set and the game.

Gyemi once again led the way for the Blue & Gold with a game high 22 kills and 6 digs, while Moate chipped in 12 kills and six digs and rookie setter Nolan Langley had 10 digs and 47 assists.

Up Next

Windsor will now travel to Kingston for a pair of games against the Queen's Gaels and RMC Paladins next weekend.
