In their final home game of the 2015-16 regular season, the Lancer women's hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to the third place Western Mustangs on Saturday night at South Windsor Arena.
Â
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 7-1-13-2 and remain out of the playoff picture, while the Mustangs improve to 13-1-8-1.
Â
Prior to the game, the Lancers honoured their fourth year seniors
Erinn Noseworthy, Natalie Barette, and
Jillian Rops.
Â
The Mustangs jumped on the board first with Brittany Clapham scoring at 13:31. Just three minutes later, OUA leading scorer
Krystin Lawrence got past a strong Western defense to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission. Â
Â
Windsor broke the tie with Lawrence's second goal of the night. Off an initial shot from Barrette, Lawrence was able to get a stick on it in mid-air to deflect it into the net.
Â
Western then went on to score three unanswered goals over four minutes, two of which were on the power play, when the Lancers got into some penalty trouble midway through the period. Overall, the Mustangs went 2-for-7 on the night, while the Lancers went 1-for-6 with the extra man.
Â
Western scored two more goals in the third period before the Lancers got on the board again. Windsor's third and final goal of the night was a power play goal late in the third period that came off the stick of
Sydney Dobbin for her first of the year, and was assisted by
Rachel Chantler and
Taylor Shepherd.
Â
Shots on goal were evenly matched throughout the game with the Mustangs narrowly edging Windsor 27-24.
Â
The Lancers will play their final game of the season next Saturday, February 20th, when they travel to Toronto to face the York Lions. Â
