On their third road trip of the season, the Lancer women's hockey team narrowly lost two games to the York Lions and Brock Badgers.
Â
The Lions scored with five seconds remaining on Saturday to defeat the Lancers 3-2, and then on Sunday Windsor went into a shootout against the Badgers, falling 2-1.
Â
Saturday vs York
Both teams battled hard right from the start, but neither were able to get the puck in the net. This was finally broken by Brooke Anderson when she scored the first goal of the game at 7:47, giving the Lions an early lead.
Â
The Lancers added a goal of their own five minutes later on a power play, bringing the score to 1-1, where it would remain for the rest of the period.
Emily Bowman scored this goal, and
Larissa Borowiec and
Reagan Kaufman assisted her.
Â
In the second period, the Lions added another goal and took back the lead, this time on the power play. This goal was scored by Taylor Davison, and assisted by Chelsea Tucker and Erin Locke.
Â
The Lancers were looking to keep things tied up and
Kennedy Snively added their second goal at 17:09, assisted by Borowiec and
Lexi Contratto.
Â
Towards the end of the third period, it looked like the game would be heading into overtime as neither team had taken the lead. With five seconds left on the clock, York's Courtney Gardiner was assisted by McHolm and Cynthia St-Cyr in scoring the winner.
Â
Sunday vs Brock
Brock controlled the game early, when Kat Whiteye beat Lancers' goaltender
Molly Jenkins. The Lancers were able to regroup and play some defense, ensuring the Badgers wouldn't score again in the period. In the second period the Lancers defense improved, only allowing 10 shots to get through to Jenkins who stopped every look. Brock's Jensen Murphy faced eight shots in the second period and stopped them all.
Â
In the third period the Lancers stepped up their offensive pressure, getting a game high 13 shots on net. The Lancers kept putting it on net and eventually good things happened when
Danielle Butler beat Murphy on a nice one-timer feed from Kennedy Snivley at the 13:45 mark of the third period. The score would stand through the final buzzer and both goalies would prove themselves impenetrable in overtime period.
Â
Brock scored on their first opportunity when Maggie Spratt-Mallick scored. The Lancers missed their first two shots but kept the shootout going when
Jasmine Morning beat Murphy to keep the shootout going. Brock took the lead again in the fifth round when Christina Ieradi scored for the Badgers. The lead was short-lived however, as Raegan Kaufman beat Murphy on a top shelf goal.
Â
Later in the eighth round the game's first goal scorer would net the game winner as Kat Whiteye beat Jenkins and won the game for the Badgers.
