Konner Haas scored in double overtime, as the Lancers solidified their hold on fifth place in the OUA West division with a 3-2 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
Â
The Lancers quickly erased two one-goal deficits after the Warriors had taken leads of 1-0 and 2-1. The win puts Windsor two points up on the Warriors, who now sit in eighth place in the OUA West division with one game left in the regular season.
Â
Tyson Ness and
Dylan Denomme scored for the Lancers in regulation, before Haas gave Windsor their second OT win over Waterloo this season. Riley Sonnenburg and Stephen Silas scored goals for the Warriors, who fall to 11-12-4 on the season.
Â
Blake Richard made 36 saves to earn the win. His counterpart, Mike Morrison kicked aside 26 shots in the loss.
Â
The Warriors came out of the gates as the aggressors, outshooting the Lancers 8-3 in a scoreless first period. Control of the pace swung the other way in the second, though, and the Lancers looked like they might draw first blood on a 5-on-3 advantage late in the period. But after killing off the first penalty, Sonnenburg fired a wrist shot past Richard for a shorthanded tally, giving Waterloo a 1-0 lead.
Â
The advantage was short-lived though – just over a minute later, Morrison kicked
Scott Prier's initial shot right into the path of Ness, who slammed home the rebound to tie it at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Â
The Lancers found penalty troubles of their own late in the second period, and the Warriors made them pay in the opening minute of the third. Nearing the end of a full two-minute 5-on-3 man-advantage, Silas blasted a one-timer past Richard to give the hosts a 2-1ead.
Â
Once again, though, the Lancers responded quickly. Just 52 seconds later, and with the Lancers still shorthanded, Denomme broke in all alone and beat Morrison with a bar-down beauty to knot the game back up at 2-2.
Â
Despite outshooting the Lancers 18-8 through the third period and the first overtime session, the game wasn't decided until midway through the second overtime.
Â
Haas led a harmless-looking rush down the left wing, and fired a low shot from a sharp angle. However, the Haas wrister looked to deflect off Silas' stick, fooling Morrison just enough to let the puck squeeze through for the game-winning tally.
