Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lancers end season with loss to Hawks

The Lancer men's hockey team ended the regular season with a 3-2 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night in Waterloo.

Windsor finished the season with a 13-13-2 record to sit in sixth place in the west division, while the Golden Hawks finished 15-9-4 to place them in third. As a result, the two teams will face off in the first round of the post season starting Wednesday.

After out-shooting the Lancers 10-7 in the opening period, Laurier's Will Cook redirected the puck past Lancer netminder Kris Joyce just two minutes before the first intermission.

Minutes into the second period saw the hosts increase their lead to 2-0, with defenceman Alex Annecchiarico earning his first goal as a Golden Hawk.

Midway through the second, an equipment malfunction forced Laurier netminder Colin Furlong to be relieved by Vinny Merante. During his five minutes of play, Lancer captain Blake Blondeel put the puck past Merante and closed Laurier's lead by a single goal. Shortly thereafter, Furlong returned to the net for the remainder of the contest.

Eager to regain a comfortable cushion, Laurier push the Windsor defense and Luke Hietkamp put one past Joyce to give Laurier a 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Moving into the final period, Windsor was looking to overthrow the Hawks. In an effort to do so, second year goalie Blake Richard took over for the Lancers between the pipes.

Although the Hawks wasted no time Richard, Dylan Denomme again brought Windsor within one with a power play goal.

With two minutes left in the game, Windsor pulled Richard for the six-on-five advantage, but to no avail.

Game one of the first round will kick off on Wednesday in Waterloo, the puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30pm. Game two will be played in Windsor on Friday, February 17th, at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena. Game three is Saturday in Waterloo at 2:00pm, if necessary. All games can be seen live on www.oua.tv.
