Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 6 Lancers edged by No. 2 Marauders

The No. 6 Lancer women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 74-73 win to the No. 2 ranked McMaster Marauders Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre.

Heading into the final game of the regular season, the Lancers fall to 15-4 while the Marauders improve to 16-2 and earn their fifth straight win.

Windsor opened the game with a 7-0 run before the Marauders started to push back to pressure the hosts. Windsor led 13-8 after ten minutes.

The second quarter was a much tighter contest with the visitors outscoring the Lancers by just one 22-21. Leading 34-30 at the half, Windsor struggled from the free throw line in the first half shooting just 55% compared the Marauders 71.4%.

Emily Prevost reached her tenth double-double of the season after just twenty minutes of play, finished the half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The fourth year senior finished the game with a game high 26 points and 14 rebounds.

McMaster exploded in the third, opening with an 8-0 run en route to a 30-17 quarter victory. That didn't stop the Lancers however as they re-grouped in the fourth to come from behind and make it a one-point game with just 40 seconds remaining.

Following a Lancer free throw, the Marauders called timeout to gain possession in their end. Killing 24 seconds off the clock, the Marauders were unable to make their attempt and turned over the ball to the Blue & Gold with 18 seconds remaining. Prevost missed her field goal attempt in the paint, but got her own offensive rebound and was able to bring it back out to field goal range. With just one second on the clock, Prevost was able to get a shot off but the ball bounced off the side of the net giving the Marauders the win.

In the end, the difference came down to free throws as the Lancers shot just 59.1 % from the line compared to McMasters 73.7%.

Caitlyn Longmuir finished the game with 16 points, while Tyra Blizzard came off the bench to contribute 11. The Marauders were led by Linnaea Harper with 19 points and six rebounds.

Windsor will now close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they host the Brock Badgers at 1:00pm at the St. Denis Centre. Prior to the game the Lancers will honour their graduating seniors, Prevost and Longmuir.
