The Lancer women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (8-25, 10-25, 16-25) decision to the No. 2 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Â
Heading into their final home game of the regular season, the Lancers fall to 5-11 on the year while the Blues remain undefeated with a 16-0 record and remain atop the OUA east division standings.
Â
The Blues displayed early why they are one of the top ranked teams in the country as they quickly build a 16-4 lead in the first set, en route to a 25-8 set win. In the second, the Blues dominated from the opening serve and once again built an early 10-2 lead that they used to secure the set win.
Â
The Lancers came alive in the third set as they came from behind to tie the game at 11. However, Toronto's experience and size were too much for the Blue & Gold as the Blues rebounded and won the match 25-16.
Â
Lancer head coach
Lucas Hodgson shook things up with the Windsor starting line, opting to start a different combination of athletes for each set.
Melissa Smyth and
Rachael Cauchi led the way offensively with 3 kills each, while
Carleigh Bailey led the way defensively for the Blue & Gold with 19 digs.
Â
Toronto was led by Alina Dormann with 10 kills and 16.5 points, while Anna Licht also chipped in 10 kills.
Â
Windsor will host the Trent Excalibur on Saturday night at 6:00pm at the St. Denis Centre. Prior to the game, the team will honour Smyth as she graduates from the program this year.
