Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Hawks sweep weekend series against Lancers

The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team is still looking for the first win of 2018 after dropping a pair of home games to the Laurier Golden Hawks at South Windsor Arena over the weekend.

Windsor lost 3-2 in overtime to the Hawks on Friday night before suffering an even tough blow on Saturday with a 7-2 loss in game two of the series.

With a 6-8-6 record, the Blue & Gold are just holding on to a playoff spot while the Hawks improved to 13-5-2 and sit in second place in the west division.

FRIDAY
In a scoreless and penalty-less first period, Lancer goaltender Jonathan Reinhart kept the Lancers in the game as the Golden Hawks came out on fire. Windsor rebounded in the second and scored two goals in the final five minutes of the period with markers from Jake Brown and Ryan Taylor to take a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

Both teams came out strong in the third and the Lancers managed to control the play for much of the period, however, the Hawks came to life midway through the frame to score a pair of goals one minute apart to tie the game and send the match into overtime.

Halfway through the extra period, Laurier's Will Cook scored his second of the game to give the visitors game one.

SATURDAY
The game started off rough for the Blue and Gold as Laurier's Trevor Sauder scored not even two minutes into the game. Shortly thereafter, Sauder's teammate Anthony Sorrentino found twine on a power play chance. After the initial onslaught the game settled and Windsor was able to get the intermission down just 2-0.

Determine not to be mauled again in the opening minutes it was the Lancers' turn for some early scoring. Just over a minute into the second frame Alex Friesen got the home team on the board with assets from Todd Ratchford and Chris Scott. The next two goals of the game belonged to the Golden Hawks with Will Cook and Brandon Robinson scoring respectively.

An answering goal from the Lancers Nathan Veres briefly game the Blue and Gold some hope. However, the Golden Hawks would go onto to score three unanswered goals to win the game in convincing fashion, 7-3.

The game was a physical one with 40 minutes in combined penalties; 14 minutes in the box for the Golden Hawks and 26 for the Lancers.

Both Windsor goal tenders faced 18 shots each. Starting goalie Blake Richard stopped 13 while Jonathan Reinhart made 17 stops. Golden Hawks goalie Chris Festarini stopped all but two of the 29 shots that came his way.

The Lancers penalty kill was busy all night, killing five of the eight penalties they faced. The Lancers failed to capitalize on one of their seven power plays.
