Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Lancers still looking for first win of season

The Lancer women's hockey team is still searching for their first win of the season after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and a 3-2 loss to Western on Sunday.

SATURDAY @ GUELPH
Guelph got on the board first late in the first, but the blue and gold were quick to answer as Ashley Maitre scored an equalizer with just 34 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

The hosts would score three more and held the lead late in the third when captain Rachel Chantler scored her first of the year with 24 seconds left in regulation.

SUNDAY @ WESTERN
The Lancers hit the ice hard, applying pressure to an undefeated Mustangs squad. The pressure paid off for the Lancers midway through the first period when Meredith Goldhawk netted a power play goal, beating Western's Kaitlyn Booth to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead. The lead would be short-lived however, when Western's April Clark beat Jaydlin Spooner to tie up the game.

In the second period both teams settled down, but the Lancers kept the pressure on the Mustangs. Western was not sitting back though as they pelted Spooner and the Windsor net with pucks, yet, Spooner was up to the task. With four seconds to go in the period the Lancers re-took the lead when Goldhawk ripped a quick on past Booth to beat the buzzer and get the Lancers into final intermission with a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, the Western attack came on strong, as you'd expect from an undefeated team to do. Despite Spooner's outstanding effort between the pipes, a Western goal felt imminent. April Clark provided confirmation on a powerplay goal with just under seven minutes to go, and Shailyn Waites netted an insurance goal with 2:40 to go as the Mustangs took the game, 3-2.

Despite the loss, Jaydlin Spooner put forth an amazing performance in net, stopping 46 of the 48 shots that came her way. Western's Kaitlyn Booth made 21 saves on 23 shots.

The Lancers had a good day on the powerplay, converting on two of their four. Western had one powerplay goal in six chances.
