On their first road trip of the regular season, the Lancer women's volleyball team went 1-1 over the weekend in Kingston. They lost 3-0 (23-25, 27-29, 25-27) to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday before bounding back Sunday to defeat the RMC Paladins 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15).
SATURDAY @ QUEEN'S
After trading the first few points, the Lancers went on a run that put them up 12-6, and they appeared to be the dominant team early on.
The Gaels immediately responded with a run of their own, closing the gap to a 14-14 tie.
The rest of the set saw the two teams trading points, with the Gaels ultimately winning the first frame 25-23.
The Gaels took a quick five point lead in the second set, which they maintained for the majority of the game.
However, the blue and gold slowly closed the gap, finally tying the game up at 22-22, and going on for four set point opportunities before the Gaels won the game 29-27.
The Gaels again led the third set with the Lancers keeping close on their heels, not giving up any lead greater than three points.
Winnik delivered a big spike to tie the game at 17-17, and the two teams once again traded points until the Gaels led 24-23, and lining up for a match point.
A long rally saw the blue and gold tie the set 24-24, keeping themselves in the game. However Queen's managed to hold on to win the frame 27-25, taking the Lancers in three straight sets.
Brooke Davis led the Lancers with 18 assists and seven digs, with Queen's Sierra Hardy leading both teams in assists with 31.
Alex Pollard and Ally Winnik also made offensive contributions with seven kills each.
SUNDAY @ RMC
The first set was a tightly contested affair as both teams struggled to get their offense on track. Neither team achieved a kill percentage of .150. The Paladins fought through the defensive stalemate to take the set by a close margin, 25-22.
In the second set, the Lancers offense found its groove. Not only did the Lancers start sparking, their defensive success carried over from the first set as the Paladins had limited offensive chances. First year HK major
Amie Slawson put in a great effort on the defensive end with 28 digs in the match as the Lancers took the second set, 25-19.
The third set went much like the second, with the Lancers offense improving their attack. Though the Lancers allowed the Paladins to have their best offensive set, the Lancers got the job done, taking the set 25-18.
The fourth set was by far the Lancers' best, with strong contributions from
Lexi Pollard,
Alana Gyemi and
Paige Phills, the Lancers built a sizeable lead. The defense did its job, holding the paladins to their worst kill percentage of the entire match on their way to a 25-15 win to take the match 3-1.
Slawson made her presence felt for the Lancers, leading all players in digs with 28. RMC was led by Kara Stephan who had 20.
Stephan also had a day on offense, leading all plyers in kills with 22. The Lancers were paced by
Lexi Pollard's 12 kills.
The Lancers had a great day at the service line, tripling RMC's aces, 15-5.
