In a very tough and even match, the Lancer men's hockey team narrowly lost 1-0 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
Â
Heading into a home-and-home series with the Western Mustangs to close out the first half of the season, the Lancers are now 7-7 on the year and in sixth place in the west division.
Â
GAME STATS
Johnathan Reinhart was remarkable in net stopping 40 shots that came his way. Guelph's Evan Cormier was equally as impressive turning aside 28 shots to earn the shut out.
Â
It was a busy night in the penalty box as both clubs combined for 62 penalty minutes, however, of the 15 power play opportunities, neither team was able to capitalize. Â Â
Â
GAME FLOW
The game was a physical affair and the Lancers and Gryphons struggled to establish an upper hand in the game. Good defense was key early as both teams were evenly matched. The Gryphons managed to put more pucks on the net than the Lancers in the first period but failed to make the difference count on the scoreboard as the teams went into the intermission tied at zero.
Â
The second was much like a repeat of the first period with both teams playing a physical brand of hockey. The second period was essentially played with four players for each team with the period being littered by penalties for both sides. For all the physicality and powerplays, the scoreboard stayed at zero through 40 minutes of action.
Â
The Gryphons put something on the board early in the third period when Matt Kenney beat Reinhart to put the Gryphons up 1-0.
