The Windsor Lancers men's soccer team battled hard all night long in a wild game but came up on the heartbreaking side of a 119th penalty kick, falling 4-3 to Brock in the first round of the OUA playoffs on Wednesday.
The Lancers were the first on the board with a beautiful strike from
Tanner Page to beat Alexander May and establish an early 1-0 lead on the road. Windsor keeper
Kaneen Fells had an amazing first half, despite allowing a goal to tie the game in the 22nd minute. Fells made four saves in the half to ensure the Badgers high powered attack didn't sink the Lancers early. On the strength of Page's goal and Fells' performance in net, the Lancers and Badgers were tied 1-1.
The second half was incredibly tight, with neither team giving an inch, making offensive opportunities scarce. Page's 67' minute penalty shot was the first offensive chance of the half, putting the Lancers up 2-1 with time ticking away. Unfortunately for Windsor, the Badgers were relentless, scoring two quick goals within 10 minutes to take their own 3-2 lead. With the Lancers desperately needing a goal it was a familiar face who capitalized in the 84th minute, as Page put a header past May for his third of the game to tie it and send the game to extra time.
In the first overtime period the Lancers tilted the field strongly in their favour, producing offensive chances consistently. Brock's Alexander May was up to the task however, making four saves in the first overtime to keep his Badgers even. In the second overtime period Brock evened the field and played a much better defence. With scoring chances difficult to come by, the Lancers hearts dropped when the Badgers sent Jared Agyemang to the penalty spot in the 119
th minute. Fells couldn't make the save and despite him making six saves on the day, the Lancers fell 4-3 in extra time.
The blue and gold would like to thank friends, family, parents, alumni, fans and supporters Lancer soccer for an exciting 2019 season. The Lancers are a young team and we look forward to having many of the same faces back on the pitch in 2020. Until then, stay tuned to
