The Windsor Lancers rallied for an impressive and convincing win Saturday night with an 82-68 victory over the Queen's Gaels.
Â
The blue and gold were locked in a tight game when a barrage of three pointers and inspired defense won the night as the Lancers improved to an OUA leading 7-1 on the season.
Â
GAME STATS
Eve Uwayesu led the Lancers with 21 points while
Kaylee Anagnostopoulos' double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action before leaving the game with an injury helped lead the Lancers in the victory. Queen's Sophie de Goede also double-doubled with 27 points and 14 boards.
Â
The Lancers out rebounded the Gaels 47-34, creating plenty of extra possessions on the night.
Â
GAME FLOW
The Lancers got things going with some good shooting early when
Jordan Gutt hit her first three pointer of the game to give the Lancers an early 11-5 lead. Unfortunately for the blue and gold the Gaels came on strong, blanking the Lancers for the remainder of the quarter. A late three by
Erin Kenny put the Lancers back on top at the end of the quarter, 15-12. Â
Â
The second was a tightly contested affair as both teams matched each other shot for shot. The Windsor offense struggled to produce at times but the defensive intensity kept the Lancers just ahead. Uwayesu's late three looked like it may give the Lancers a three possession lead at half but a clutch three by Queen's Sophie de Goede made it a close 37-33 at half in favour of the Lancers at half.
Â
The third quarter saw the Lancers heat up from deep with back-to-back makes by Uwayesu and
Nyamuoch Teny to give Windsor their biggest lead of the game. Â The Gaels played their way back into it late before a Windsor run capped by an Uwayesu buzzer beater put the Lancers up by nine heading into the final frame. Â
Â
The fourth quarter was all blue and gold as the Lancers found their range from deep and let loose. The back court duo of Uwayesu and
Harriet Carey proved un-guardable for Queen's as the pair hit four straight three pointers. The Lancer offense hit a new gear after losing Anagnostopoulos to an injury, dominating the game from that point on and picking up an impressive 82-66 win in the process.
Â
QUOTE FROM THE COACH
"They did it for Kaylee," said head coach Chantal Vallée on the team's late run. "Kaylee is our captain, she is the heart of this team. She has been here five years and always works hard. She kept us in the game and none of these girls were going to go back to the locker room and look Kaylee in the face without a win."
