The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team had to battle hard for all 40 minutes Friday evening in Sault Ste. Marie, coming away with a well earned 75-61 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds.
 
The Thunderbirds never made it easy on the Lancers but a third quarter surge gave the Lancers the separation they needed to hold on and improve to 8-1 on the season.
 
GAME STATS
Dionne Martin led all scorers with 23 points on 67 per cent shooting. Kayah Clarke in her return from injury led the Lancers with 18 points on 43 per cent shooting.
 
Jordan Gutt led the effort on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds. The Thunderbird were led by Karly Fracalanza and Sawyer Fischer who each pulled down five.
 
Eve Uwayesu had a great defensive game, leading all players with three steals on the game.
 
The Lancers doubled up Algoma on the boards, pout-rebounding the Thunderbirds 42-21 as a team.
 
GAME FLOW
Clarke was a spark off the bench in the first half with 11 points for the Lancers, who struggled on offense early in the game, shooting just 31 per cent in the first half including two-for-two from deep. The Thunderbirds were clicking on both ends for most of the half, defending the Lancers well and making more of their looks, but it was the Blue and Gold up at halftime, 34-29 in a defensive struggle.
 
The Lancers shooting improved drastically in the second half, the Lancers shot 42 per cent from the field. While the Thunderbirds' shooting improved as well in the second half, the third quarter was all Windsor. Algoma's Dionne Martin tried to carry her team, scoring 14 points in the second half alone, but the Lancers had done their damage and held the lead, earning a stingy win on the road, 75-61.
